Description

M23 is an open cluster located 2400 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius at a declination of -19 degrees.  It is a magnitude 5.5 cluster which spans 35 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 25 light years.From our view from earth, it occupies an area of the sky roughly the size of the full moon. It contains almost 200 stars. Like most open clusters, the stars are primarily hot young stars which are blue in color.
