Description

At first sight diffuse nebula NGC 346 may not look all that impressive. But when one factors in the 200,000 light years distance to the Small Magellanic Cloud and realises that NGC 346 spans at least 560 light years then its true nature becomes apparent. For example, it is quite a bit larger than the Eta Carinae Nebula which, spanning 460 light years, is one of the largest star forming regions in our Milky Way galaxy. And clearly, it dwarfs the Great Orion Nebula which is only 24 light years across.
