Description

Jupiter and Mars appeared 1/3 of a degree apart on the morning of January 6, 2017. It was quite a stunning sight with and without a telescope. My best view was near dawn through a 32 mm eyepiece through which the cloud bands on Jupiter were visible and the red of Mars was striking. My images don't do the sight justice. This image of the conjunction was taken with a Celestron 8 inch Evolution SCT and Nikon D750 camera (ISO3200, 1/4 sec exposure). All four moons of Jupiter are nicely visible along with the planets. Jupiter and Mars appear somewhat washed out and show blur due to the exposure time of 1/4 sec I needed to clearly capture the moons.
