Description

Named for naturalist John Muir, this camp sits at 10,188 ft on Mt. Rainier and is an access point to the glaciated areas and summit above. This image was compiled from data taken the night after we'd made camp in late July. The Milky way rises in the south over some of the historic stone buildings of the camp. The first public buildings were constructed there in 1921 and the camp is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the full moon was timed terribly, I was able to capture this data before it rose. In terms of raw physical effort, this image holds the record for the hardest to acquire to date. I'd made the summit in 2011, but the melt was too much to make a safe journey this time the following day. I was still happy to get back to camp and another excellent night of clear skies in such an awesome location.
