Description

This intensely blue planetary is one of my favorite off the beaten track planetary nebulas. Its blue color makes it an easy visual target for moderately sized telescopes as well as an interesting imaging target. At close to 4 arcminutes in size, its nearly four times the diameter of the ring nebula, but has a lower surface brightness making it a little harder to spot. Combined with its large size, this means lower magnification actually helps detecting it visually. It looks more like a skull visually than it does when imaged, I think. The central star is prominent both visually and photographically and is one of the eyes in the "skull" when observed visually.
