Description

The Sculptor Galaxy (or Silver Coin Galaxy or Silver Dollar Galaxy), to the right of the picture, is a spiral galaxy at an estimated distance of 10 to 13 million light-years. It was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783. From our point of view the galaxy is almost edge-on, hence we have the impression of an alongated galaxy. To the botton of the picture we have another celestial object, a star cluster catalogued as NGC 288. Since it lies inside our own galaxy, its distance is much smaller than the Sculptor Galaxy, only 29 thousand light-years away.
