Description

NGC 7023, also known as the Iris Nebula, is a reflection nebula located in the constellation Cepheus. Unlike emission nebulae (such as the previously mentioned Dumbbell Nebula) that glow due to the ionization of gases by nearby stars, reflection nebulae shine by reflecting the light of nearby stars.

The Iris Nebula gets its name from the prominent dark feature at its center, which looks like an iris of an eye. The dark patch is actually a dense cloud of dust that obscures the background starlight. Surrounding this dark core is a region of gas and dust that reflects the light from nearby stars, creating a stunning blue glow.

The distance to the Iris Nebula is estimated to be around 1,300 light-years from Earth, which places it relatively close in astronomical terms.

The Iris Nebula is associated with a young star cluster located within it. The light from these young, hot stars is what gives the nebula its characteristic blue glow.
Reflection nebulae like NGC 7023 are relatively short-lived in astronomical terms. Over time, the young stars illuminating the nebula will move away from their birthplace, and the nebula will gradually disperse.

I exposed the IRIS for 17 plus hours over 4 nights...I first begin gathering data in mid June and finished it this past week.
