Description

NGC 6744 is thought to have a very similar structure to the Milky Way (although larger, at 175,000 light years across).  Its outer arm at the upper left has been tugged out of shape by a satellite galaxy, ESO 104-38, an irregular galaxy likely similar to our Small Magellanic Cloud.

NGC 6744 is about 30 million light years away.  Can you spot the other galaxies in this image?  The faint patch off to the left is a far more distant galaxy, IC 4820, about 180 million light years away.  The even fainter smudge at 4:00 is a low surface brightness galaxy, ESO 104-44, and the cigar above that is ESO 104-43.
