Description

Leo I lies within 12 arc minutes of Regulus in Leo.  Scattered light from the star makes observing and studying the galaxy much more difficult and it was only as recent as the 1990s when Leo I was first detected visually.  It is a member of the Local Group of galaxies and thought to be one of the most distant satellites of the Milky Way at a distance of 820000 light years.  Typical to a dwarf galaxy, the metallicity (abundance of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium) of Leo I is very low - only one percent of the Sun.

Imaged over several nights:  Feb 5-7, 2023.
