Description

NGC 2071 is a young star-forming region located in the constellation Orion, approximately 1,500 light-years away from Earth. Here are some interesting facts about NGC 2071:
  • A complex region of gas and dust where stars are currently forming. The region contains a number of young stars, including a massive, hot star called HD 290861.
  • Home to a number of Herbig-Haro objects, which are jet-like structures created when young stars eject material into the surrounding gas and dust.
  • Has a large, dark cloud of dust that appears as a prominent feature in many images of the region. This cloud, known as Barnard 3, is thought to be a site of ongoing star formation.
  • Located in the larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, which is one of the closest regions of ongoing star formation to Earth. The Orion Molecular Cloud Complex contains a number of other interesting features, including the Orion Nebula and the Horsehead Nebula.
