Description

We were on a trip in Pisa, Italy, which coincided with the 8 October 2022 conjunction of Moon and Jupiter near full moon. We arrived a few days early, fully prepared with our camera, tripod and lenses. For two days and nights we were walking around, on a mission to find the best spots to catch this event with a nice view of the town (wide-field) or a building (with telephoto lens). We had a number of shots at various places, but we could not find the ideal scene for zooming on this spectacular event. Jupiter itself was in full power, with just a few weeks past its closest approach to Earth. Finally, we got inspiration from a photo we found on the web, made at the same location, but at the end we altered the scene a bit. We uploaded two versions here. The one with both Jupiter and Moon is the original idea, but we actually find the one with just the Moon more striking. Let us know your opinion!

Both versions were merged from two pictures, one with exposition and focus settings on the foreground, the other on Moon.

Moon+Jupiter foreground: ISO 100, f=256mm, F11, 2.5s
Moon foreground: ISO 100, f=241mm, F11, 2.0s;
Moon for both images: F5.6, 1/100s
(originally shot at 400mm, but scale was adjusted)

We experimented with Jupiter as well and we did see all four moons and even the two major dark stripes with short exposure, but the result was not spectacular.
