Description

The Orion Nebula is one of those DSOs, like the Pleiades and Andromeda, that every new astrophotographer goes for early on. Nevertheless, I never grow tired of this gorgeous nebula.  It is so complex and there is a lot going on in it. Two open star clusters radiate the energy that ionizes much of the gas. The mysterious "bullets" rocket out of the region.  New star systems are actively forming within it.  But the Orion is a demanding target to shoot. The Trapezium Cluster is exceedingly bright and outer regions are quite dim.  I found a multi-layer approach to shooting and developing the complex was the best way to capture its full dynamic range.  Fortunately, it is so bright that from my dark sky region it took only 16.33 minutes to capture all the subs.  One second, 5 second and 60 second subs were captured to accommodate the Trapezium Cluster's brightness, the mid-range brightness of the middle nebula, and the darkness of the outer regions.
