Description

Centaurus A (NGC 5128) is a visually stunning starburst galaxy (A galaxy undergoing an unusually high rate of star formation that is thought to be triggered by collisions between galaxies) located in the constellation Centaurus. At approximately 10-13 million light years away, it is one of the closest radio galaxies (A galaxy with giant regions of radio emission extending well beyond its visible structure) to Earth. For this reason this galaxy is extensively studied by Astronomers. The center of the galaxy contains a supermassive black hole with a mass of 55 million solar masses. Centaurus A is also the fifth brightest galaxy in the sky and easily visible with a small telescope.
