Description

This images shows many galaxies in the constellation of Libra. The focus of the image is on NGC 5917 (Arp 254) slightly right of center and PGC 54817 slightly left. Both of these rarely imaged galaxies are located about 85 million light years away and are interacting with each other.

The galaxy NGC 5917 is classified as an Arp object in the category of "Galaxies with the Appearance of Fission". This galaxy is an interesting hybrid of a barred spiral galaxy and an irregular galaxy, caused by its gravitational interaction with PGC 54817. Its apparent size is 1.5 arc-minutes, which corresponds to a diameter of just 40,000 light years.

The shape of the tidal stream of PGC 54817 is unique, leading to its nickname of the "Hooked Galaxy". This galaxy's extended length covers 160,000 light years, 4x that of its companion galaxy. It is fascinating to me how the star stream extends towards NGC 5917 and then curves back to create the hook shape.

The 3 faint orangish galaxies to the left and slightly above the center of the image are all about 800 million light years from us. The distances between these 3 galaxies prevent them from interacting with each other.

Many other distant galaxies are visible in the background.
