Description

I have no southern view from my house and winter here is almost always cloudy. Also, I’m in a Bortle 6, so reflection and dark nebulas are pretty much a waste of time. When a short stretch of clear skies opened up during the last new moon about 300 miles south in West Virginia, I jumped.

Shooting this sector of Orion (and also, M78) was a thrill since I had never done so and because they are so complex and compelling. Yes, many have shot these before, just like many have already caught big fish. But should that stop one from fishing?

In processing I decided to simply let Alnitak be Alnitak. We have more tools than ever to tame it but since the Esprit 100ED doesn’t embarrass itself on bright stars I decided to just let it be. Some Ha extracted from a dual narrowband session was helpful for the emission region.
