Description

IC 348 is an about 2 million years old open star cluster embeded into the reflection nebula vdB 19 (Cederblad 20) that is lighted by the 3,8 mag star Omicron Persei (Atik).

The region is also characterized by large clouds of interstellar dust. The magenta/red glooming area in the right part of the image is the dark nebula Barnard 3 surrounded by an accumulation of dust that shows a red luminescense in response to ultraviolet photons known as Extended Red Emission.

I really like the colorful mix of emission, reflection and dust nebulae. A difficult object.

Addendum:
I discovered the trail of an asteroid beneath IC 348.
(1604) Tombaugh is a rare Eos asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt with a diameter of about 32 kilometers. It was discovered on March 24, 1931 by American astronomer Carl Otto Lampland at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona and named after the discoverer of Pluto, Clyde Tombaugh.
