Revisiting North America with a Pelican

A little over a year ago I imaged my first astrophotography target - the North America Nebula. I decided to revisit it again this year, and make it my first target using my new Astrodon and Chroma filters. This is a two-panel mosaic of the region, with sulfur mapped to red, hydrogen to orange, and oxygen to blue.

Target Details:

The North America and Pelican Nebulae, together known as Sharpless 117 (SH2-117) span an estimated 140 light-years across. Like other emission nebulae, the gases in this region are ionized by high-energy ultraviolet radiation from a hot nearby star. A dark band of interstellar dust (known as L935) runs through this region from our line of sight, obscuring our view to much of the nebula. However, this nebulosity remains visible in wavelengths such as infrared and radio, which reveal the presence of many other luminous stars, including the star that is responsible for ionizing the gas in this region and providing us with a beautiful view, J205551.3+435225.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
