Description

The Heart Nebula is an emission nebula, whose ionised gas is energised by the radiation from the bright stars visible in this image, which form an open cluster known as Melotta 15. It is about 7500 light years away.

This image shows part of the Heart Nebula, imaged in a small gap in generally bad weather, resulting in few sub-frames: Ha - 1x15', O III - 2x15', S II - 2x15'.

This was my first image with a new OS 115mm scope. I used a TeleVue 0.8 reducer/flattener which turned out not to be well matched to the scope: when I bought a camera with a larger chip (QSI583) the corners showed clear evidence of a curved focal plane.
