Description

The Dumbell Nebula is a planetary nebula. Planetary nebulae are the remnants of supernova explosions: what we are seeing is the material ejected from the star; they have their potentially misleading name because many of these disc-like objects can be mistaken for planets.

M27 lies about 1 360 light-years away and is about 2 light-years across. With the velocity of the expanding material having been measured at 31 km/s it is almost 10 000 years since the supernova.
