Description

Well-known cluster of galaxies. The blueish galaxy is really a dwarf galaxy in the foreground. The other four are in the distance and are gravitationally interacting. Long streamers of stars are being torn off the galaxies by tidal forces.

In the wider field are several other distant galaxies.

By far my biggest project up to this time. Started with a color camera, and got a monochrome camera and filter wheel while in the process of capturing exposures. So two cameras were used. Captured images over seven nights. Wildfire smoke interrupted the project at one point. The final image uses color only from the monochrome camera and filter wheel. Instead of discarding the images from the color camera, I stacked them and converted the result to a luminance image and combined it with the luminance images from the monochrome camera.

All worth it; very happy with the final result.

The acquisition details above include all exposures. The final image used
L - 150 (of 225) frames x 300s @ Gain 100 @ -10C = 12h 30m exposure time
R,G,B - 36 (of 42) frames x 300s @ Gain 100 @ -10C = 3h 00m exposure time; each
Color - 111 (of 140) frames x 300s @ Gain 200 @ -10C = 9h 15m exposure time
30h 45m total exposure time
