Description

The Hercules cluster is a massive cluster located approximately 500 million light-years away in the constellation Hercules. It is part of the Hercules Supercluster, which is part of the larger Great Wall super-structure. The Hercules cluster is loaded with star-forming spiral galaxies but has few elliptical galaxies.

Below are some of the galaxies in this cluster that I found interesting. Roll over the image to see the annotations for the callouts below.
  • Near the center of the image is NGC 6050, a pair of interacting spiral galaxies.
  • Below NGC 6050 is IC1182 which appears as a spiral with a central jet containing knots of material. Research suggests that this is two galaxies in the process of merging.
  • To the right of NGC 6050 is IC1178, a pair of prominent yellow cast spiral galaxies merging.
  • Above and left of NGC 6050 is NGC 6045 a barred spiral galaxy with a small galaxy PGC 84720 in the foreground.
  • Follow a line from NGC 6050 through NGC 6045 to get to NGC 6040, a spiral galaxy that is interacting with lenticular galaxy PGC 56942.
