Description

I observed this object on 16 September 2015 at the Okie-Tex Star Party using a 12” Skywatcher Dobsonian: “Large, bright, irregular globular cluster. Brightens substantially towards the core. Class IX. Distance estimate is 20,000 LY. Star hopped from Marfik. Located with finderscope.”

I observed this object on 8 September 2023 at the Okie-Tex Star Party using a 22” Obsession UC Dobsonian: M12 is large, irregularly shaped, and uniformly bright across most of the cluster. Some stars resolved. It does not have a dense core. No colors noted.

I obtained the calibrated lights frames used to create the final image from Telescope Live. The frames were imaged by the CHI-1-CMOS Telescope at the El Sauce Observatory in Chile.

Note: Close to M10. 75 LY in diameter.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: IX
Distance: 16,440 LY
Type: Hub Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Above the disc of the MW about halfway to the core.
Any stars resolved: No
Undergoing Core Collapse: No
