Description

Despite another mediocre forecast, the skies cleared a little on Jan 1 around 10pm.  I rushed out with my portable rig to a location where my horizon isn't obscured by trees and had a go at imaging comet Leonard.

Not having imaged for a month, I did lots of dumb things - forgetting to cool the sensor was the dumbest - and with the weather, I wasn't able to get a decent flat field.  In the end I only got 30 x 30sec frames through cloud  in twilight and looking towards the lights of Queenstown, but the Nikon is a fact lens and I am happy with the results (actually amazed, given the conditions and my impcompetence).

Initially I worried about the reddish blotches, thinking it was the flat-field.  But after referring to Telescopius, I am pretty sure this is diffuse nebular emission.  [This Nikon is fast for low surface brightness stuff. ]

While it isn't anywhere close to some of the spectacular images of Comet Leonard on this site, this image does show almost 7degrees of tail.  And, hey, I am imaging again from Speargrass Flat.
