Description

The idea of this image of Stephan’s quintet was to play with the redshift of the Ha emission. The foreground galaxy NGC7320 has a redshift of 786 km/s, whereas the redshift of the background galaxies galaxies NCG7328a+b and NCG7319 is between 5.774 - 6.764 km/s (date from SIMBADWikipedia). By using the Fizeau-Doppler formula (found on Wikipedia under redshift) one finds that the redshift of the 656 nm Ha emission from the foreground galaxy is redshifted by 2 nm, and thus passes unhindered through my 5nm Ha filter. The Ha emission from the background galaxies is redshifted out to around 670 nm, and will thus not pass the Ha filter. However, this redshifted Ha emission will pass through my 672nm SII filter. I therefore decided to map both Ha exposures and SII exposures to the red channel in order to show the Ha emission from both the foreground galaxy AND the shock wave caused by the collision of NGC7318b and NGC7319
