Description

This object is a spiral galaxy located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of 0 degrees.  It is a magnitude 11 galaxy which spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.

The galaxy has no bulge and a mottled disk.  The core has an intense orange color.  This galaxy is classified as a starburst galaxy, with significant star formation believed to be occurring as evidenced by the many blue star cluster regions throughout the disk.

The small blue galaxy at the lower left is NGC 4668.  It is the same distance away as NGC 4666.  It looks like a Magellanic galaxy to me.  The pair is close enough to likely be interacting, although I see little deformation of the NGC 4666 disk as a result.
