A Starry Night at Assateague State Park

The skies over Assateague Island State Park in eastern Maryland are fantastic for stargazing and astrophotography. We've been taking annual camping trips here for the past decade or so, and it's always a treat to be there when there are at least a few hours of moonless night sky to enjoy. This image was taken on the night of September 17th, 2022 from the top of the beachside dune looking out over the ocean to the East. Amidst a sky full of stars, Jupiter stands out as the brightest night sky object in this image.

Imaged using a Nikon D5300 (full spectrum modified), IDAS HEUIB-II (H-α Enhanced UV IR Blocking) filter, and 14 mm Rokinon lens at F/2.8. Exposures were 15 seconds at ISO-3200.

Combined 5 subs using Sequator (composition = align stars/freeze ground, auto brightness=ON, HDR=ON, LP reduction = ON/Level 2, enhance starlight=ON).

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
