Description

This is an almost four-hour animation of a sunspot and surrounding region. The animation follows the sunspot itself. But you can see that it is moving toward the visual limb of the sun as it comes more into view in the lower right portion of the image. We always try to align our solar scopes as best we can so as to keep the sunspot at the center of the image during a series of captures. Even with the best alignment, there is still the issue of the sun's rotation, that is clearly illustrated in this GIF file.

There is no dramatic activity during the period of the animation. But there are lots of relatively visually little changes in the spot and the surface features. It takes a few run-throughs watching the GIF to appreciate how many there are during this four-hour period.

The small image in the upper-right is a portion of the NOAA solar map created each day to show the artive regions with a brief description of each. This image was probably created at the start of the day and shows the position of AR 3321. This can give you another sense of the rotation distance of the sun from that point to when I started and ended my imaging session.
