This is the last image from my 2022 "UK heatwave sessions". I collected it over two nights for a grand total of about 11h. SH2-124 is a small and faint emission nebula in Cygnus, the lack of information about earned it on Astrobin ( credits to
@Kevin Morefield ) the moniker of "Almost Nothing Nebula".
It lies not far (in terms of angular distance) from the more famous Cocoon Nebula., to which it shows some resemblance, so much that sometimes Sh2-124 is referred to as the "Cocoon Nebula"'s twin but without its reflection features. In fact, similarly to its more famous twin, Sh2-124 is kind of circular and has a complex and beautiful network of dark dust lanes. Unlike the Cocoon nebula, which is mainly an H-a emitter, Sh2-124 has also a signal in the S and O wavelengths. It is very weak though, this is an 11h total integration time image and still it is incredibly noisy...I have been wandering if I should have chosen a brighter and easier object to make the most of the clear sky I had, but in the end I think I'm very happy with my choice: usually brighter objects are well known whereas in this way I got to know a non-mainstream object which is beautiful nonetheless!
