Description

And another from Okie-Tex! One-shot color images process relatively quickly, especially the widefield ones.

This is the California Nebula, a large emission nebula region within the constellation Perseus -- do you see the shape of the state? It's the length of 5 full Moons across the sky, but because of its large apparent size, it's difficult to observe visually because its light is so spread out. Lying about 1,000 lightyears away, the red glow is due to hydrogen gas that is energized by the very energetic star Xi Persei, or Menkib, the bright star just to the right of the center-top-ish part of the nebula.

By chance, the California Nebula crosses zenith overhead of Central California, whose latitude (36 deg) is the same as the nebula's declination!
