Description

IC 342, aka Caldwell 5, is a spiral galaxy roughly half the size of our own located in the constellation Camelopardalis. It is a member of the IC342/Maffei Group, which sits just outside of the local group. Distances I found were between 9 and 11mm light years from earth. It is oriented in line with the plane of the Milky Way, so its light is being scattered by the dust and stars of our own galaxy. If this weren’t the case, it would be one of the brightest galaxies in the sky. Many images show it lurking in the background of a dense star field. With the help of Star Xterminator, I decided to show it with the star field greatly muted. It’s apparent size is about that of the full moon. This image is taken at 2800mm, but if I were to do it over again, I would have used less focal length.
