Description

M 103 (also known as NGC 581 or, sometimes, by the nickname Arrow Cluster) was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781 and was included in Charles Messier's catalogue, in which it is described as follows: "Cluster of stars between e and d in the leg of Cassiopeia.” Heinrich Louis d'Arrest describes it as an irregular cluster of stars from the ninth to the eleventh magnitude, with a double star on the north side.zoom.jpg
NGC 663 was discovered by William Herschel on November 3, 1787 along with several other nearby open clusters, observing through his 18.7-inch reflecting telescope; he described it as a brilliant and extensive cluster full of rather bright stars. His son John Herschel later re-observed it and included it in his General Catalog of Nebulae and Clusters with number 392.zoom2.jpg
NGC 659 was first spotted by Caroline Lucretia Herschel in 1783 through a 4.2-inch reflecting telescope, later reporting it to her brother William Herschel. The latter's son, John, reobserved it and then included it in his General Catalog of Nebulae and Clusters with number 389.zoom3.jpg
