I first noticed this strong Ha emission feature in a widefield I shot of the North American and Pelican area in Cygnus. I was surprised how seldom it was imaged by itself with a longer FL setup - practically never. So here it is and I've taken the liberty to call it the Bonfire Nebula.

Cygnus is high this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere and we have had superb conditions both in lack of smoke and excellent seeing. The subs here ranged from 1.3" to 2" averaging around 1.7"

The data is all SHO, combined in starless form using the dynamic blend I've described previously. The stars were removed with StarXterminator and I isolated them by subtracting the starless from the with star SHO masters. The stars were combined and color balance separately also using the dynamic blend method. This yields decent star color out of just narrowband data. Not accurate star colors but close. The stars were added back in at the end of the process in PS using a sreen layer.

The strength of the SII and Ha and the relative weakness of the OIII yielded the bright yellow-orange highlights. This color and the shape of the nebula reminding me of a bonfire.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
