Imaged Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks on the night of February 25, 2024. The comet's brightness has increased dramatically since I last imaged it earlier in February, and finally I was able to capture the comet's tail. The toughest aspect of capturing this comet for me these days is that I am only getting about 30 minutes of imaging time betwwen when it gets dark enough to capture the comet and when it sets behind the neighbors trees....

Imaged with a William Optics GT81 at F4.7 (382 mm focal length) using Flat6A II field flattener/0.8x reducer, UVIRcut filter, and ZWO ASI 533MC Pro.
Total integration time of ~20 minutesr: 14 subs at Gain = 100 with an exposure time of 90 seconds.

Processing steps: All images pre-processed using Pixinsight's weighted batch pre-processing script (WBPP) to perform calibration, debayering, and star registration. First I integrated the star aligned images. Then I ran starXterminator to generate a stars only image. Next, I comet aligned the individual subs subtracting the star-aligned, stars only master to generate comet aligned, comet only images. I integrated the comet only images, removed gradients using the new GradientCorrection process from PixInsight, then re-combined with the stars only master. This gave me a comet + stars image. Additional processing on the final mosaic image: blurXterminator (correct only), spcc, blurXterminator, noiseXterminator, GHS2 stretch, curves adjustment, and EZHDR script.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
