Description

Moderately small in size at about 10 arcmin and located in Camelopardalis, NGC 1961 is a distorted spiral located at a distance of about 200 million light years. It is  around 220,000 light years across. Although distortion is often caused by a companion galaxy or galactic collision, no such other galaxy has been found and it has been suspected that the distortion was caused by interaction with a surrounding cloud of intergalactic gas. It has also been found to have a bright  X-ray corona. It is a member of a group of nine nearby galaxies an has been host to four supernovae since 1998.

Taken from Skiesaway observatory over 9 nights between  January 11th and February 11th, 2024.
