Description

IC- 1318, otherwise known as the "Butterfly Nebula" is the area of hydrogen emission surrounding the star Sadr (at the right), the central star in the constellation of Cygnus. The brilliant reds are from the light of glowing hydrogen gas. The dark areas are not simply void of stars...they are relatively dense clouds of dust that block the light of the stars beyond.

IC-1318 lies at a distance of 5000 light years. This image is a composite of 12 10-minute exposures in luminance, along with 5 10 minute exposures in each of red, green and blue. Some detail and slight brightening of the red and blue channels comes from a previous image I captured in hydrogen-alpha light several years ago.
