Description

Sh2-109, a wonderful, large and complex system of HII regions, dark nebulae, bright columns of gas and associations of young stars part of the Cygnus molecular nebula complex. It is a giant molecular cloud located about 5000 LY from the solar system and visible a few degrees south of Sadr, just north of the open cluster NGC 6871, with an apparent extent of about 17°, which is equivalent to a real diameter of 4600 LY. The complex would still be in an early stage of its evolution.
Several wonders from this region call attention. IC 1318 (Sh2-108) is a complex of nebulae located prospectively close to the star Sadr (which is actually "only" 1500 LY from the solar system). It is believed to have formed from the explosion of one or more supernovae. IC 1318 is crossed by an intense dark line, the dark nebula LND 889, which separates the two easternmost sections of this nebula. Another notable object is NGC 6888 or the Crescent Nebula (https://www.astrobin.com/full/tjtomr/0/). It is a "stellar wind bubble" generated by a massive Wolf-Rayet star (HD 192163), which is located inside it. This star would also be responsible for the nebula, which would form the material of the outermost layers which the star expelled. Finally, to the south-west of the complex is Sh2-101 or the Tulip Nebula (https://www.astrobin.com/full/g607i4/C/), a large HII region about 8750 light-years away from the solar system, which would host some active star formation phenomena.
