Description

NGC 6820 is a small reflection nebula near the open cluster NGC 6823, embedded in a large faint emission nebula called Sh 2-86. The whole area of nebulosity is often referred to as NGC 6820. The nebula has a real diameter of about 50 light years and is located about 6,000 light years away from Earth.
NGC 6823 is a small open star cluster of about 50 light-years across, dominated in brightness by a host of bright young blue stars. The center of the cluster formed about two million years ago and contains even younger stars in its outer parts. It forms the core of the Vulpecula OB1 stellar association.
The nebula and the cluster are surrounded by a large emission nebula known as Sh2-86, which contains numerous pillars of dust and gas eroded by UV radiation.
