Description

NGC 1171 is a spiral galaxy in Perseus of magnitude 12.7.  Spanning just 1.9’ x 1.0’ according to TheSkyX databases, this galaxy is a better target for a large telescope than it is for a 4” refractor.  However, since there are presently no other images of it on Astrobin besides widefield shots, something is better than nothing.  NGC 1171 appeared within the field of view of another galaxy imaging project due to the wide field of the refractor, so I consider it a “freebie.”  SIMBAD lists it as type Sc, though I have seen other designations elsewhere.  In my image, it appears to have a thin, knotty, outer arm that is nearly detached from the rest of the galaxy, a feature that is confirmed by the SDSS image.  This region of the sky is obscured by faint IFN, which likely accounts for the low surface brightness of NGC 1171, which is 22.8 mag/arcsec2 according to go-astronomy.com.
