Description

Sh2-142 and Sh2-132 are two emission nebulae located in the Cepheus OB1 region, in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way. Sh2-142 (https://www.astrobin.com/full/indn2e/0/), colloquially named as the Wizard Nebula, surrounds the young open cluster NGC 7380 in the constellation of Cepheus. The NGC 7380 complex is located at approximately 8.500 LY from the Solar System, in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way. The cluster spans approximately 20 LY with an elongated shape and an extended tail. Age estimates range from 4 to 12 million years. At the center of the cluster lies DH Cephei, a binary system consisting of two massive O-type stars. This pair are the primary ionizing source for the surrounding H II region, and are driving out the surrounding gas and dust while triggering star formation in the neighboring region.Sh2-132 (https://www.astrobin.com/full/30l6wn/0/), colloquially named as the Lion Nebula, is a large emission nebula located along the plane of the Milky Way at almost 10400 LY from the Solar System and visible in the constellation of Cepheus, a short distance from the border with the Lizard. The stars responsible for the ionization of its gases are very hot and massive; in particular, two Wolf-Rayet stars (HD 211564 and HD 211853), a star of spectral class O8.5V and about ten stars of class B. It is believed that star formation processes took place in the nebula in the past; currently these processes appear to be suspended, since there is no trace of recent activity.
