Description

Embedded within the huge Gum Nebula, this 4 panel mosaic shows probably the brightest section of the Vela Supernova Remanent (it is very faint to begin with), which itself covers a big section of the sky. Located in the southern constellation of Vela, this Type II supernova is thought to have exploded approximately 11000 years ago. Located somewhere in this image is what remains of the originator star, the Vela Pulser, which is the brightest known pulser at radio frequencies (in addition, it also emits x-rays & gamma rays).
