Description

Only had two nights between atmospheric rivers passing through from the Pacific really challenging the idea that Arizona is clear and dry, but was enough to shoot the Orion Nebula as it is one of the brightest things up there.  I had to use super short exposures (30 seconds) to avoid blowing out the core - for a total of 900+ shots at around 8 hours over two nights. Really love that I got to keep the trapezium in this shot. There's a lot that could be better about this one, especially the fact that this was my last shot I did before installing a primary mask, and Hatysa really shows it, but it's always best to post something so you can come back to it in a year and see how you've improved. Despite folks suggesting people start out on M42, I find it one of the most challenging things to shoot - it has it all in one image -- extremely bright core, very faint wisps, bright stars demanding perfect collimation, and enough broadband signal that doing a quick HOO + RGB stars leaves a lot wanting. It's a hard target! Glad I got to try it this year though. 

Probably one of the last big ticket shots I'll be able to do before our Milky Way disc kind of fades out of view in the spring and Galaxy Season starts, when our night sky looks out of the Milky Way into the wider universe instead of through it.

In addition to the short broadband exposures, I got an additional small amount (1.6 hours) of narrowband data to add in via continuum subtraction.
