Description

Again, this was a spontaneous imaging session. I checked the weather forecast and it predicted to be a clear night. Although this is starting to be the time of the year where fog might be a plague, possibly setting in at midnight, I was fortunate that it didn't bother me (the scope actually) at all.

Since I sent my narrowband filters in to the vendor for a check-up, I was left with the LRGB set. From my last wide-field image with my DSLR, I made a good experience with the multi-band pass IDAS LPS-D3 filter which I thought might be a good choice for this object as well as the filter is transmissive to all major emission lines. So, that's what I did. I’ve programmed the automated imaging session to capture about 80 to 90 minutes in each colour channel and put about 2.5h of L on top. I’ve miscalculated** the duration of the night and so my automated imaging sequence ended up collecting more R data than expected. However, it turned out that all channels produced sufficient data for a decent image.

Compared to the classical narrowband imaging, this image resembles the “true” colours of the Elephant trunk nebula quite accurately. I must admit that I start to prefer the natural colour look over artificial combinations from NB images.

I hope you enjoy!

* Besides pure exposure time, meridian flip, autofocus runs, dithering lead to additional non-productive time which can sometimes be quite a time consumer.
