The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) in RGBHa with SN 2023ixf

This wide field shot of the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101 or NGC 5457) includes some of the Pinwheel's companion galaxies: NGC 5475, NGC 5477 and NGC5472. It is believed that tidal forces from these companions have pulled the pinwheel out of symmetry. I have also included Ha data which I have used to accentuate the galaxy's many H II star forming regions. I used continuum subtraction to reduce the Ha signal to just that part that is brighter than the signal in the Red channel. I then added this residual to both the red channel and a bit to the blue channel to preserve the pink hue of H II emission nebula.

I took my initial data from April 14, 2023 to April 27, 2023. On May 19, while processing the data, supernova SN 2023ixf was discovered. So I took additional data from May 20 - May 24. In the final image, I have merged the supernova into my original data using the PixInsight max() function (overlay two images picking the brightest pixels from each). The supernova data did not include Ha data unlike the data from the rest of the galaxy but I doubt that additional Ha data would have changed its color.

Note: Rolling over the image will show the version without the supernova.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
