Description

This is a portion of the Chamaeleon Molecular Cloud, lying near the south celestial pole and one of of the closest star forming regions to our solar system.  This image is the northwest extension of the cloud which includes the irregular galaxy IC3104 (lower middle), and the brightest star in the image, β Chamaeleontis which has an associated subtle blue reflection nebula.  The image was taken from my Bortle 5 backyard in Canberra, Australia.  Suburban light pollution made it very challenging to show the faint turbulent, wispy structure of the molecular cloud (best seen in the mouse-over starless version).
