Description

These are the beautiful Antenna Galaxies, an interacting pair of spiral (NGC4038) and barred-spiral (NGC4039) galaxies. The tidal star trails left behind each look like antennae, and they extend for many hundreds of thousands of light-years. These were caused by the titanic collision between the two galaxies. Both exhibit areas of intense star formation, caused by the colliding gas clouds from both galaxies.
