Description

I am sure by now most people have seen more than enough images of the total eclipse on 8 August 2024! Even so, hopefully no one will mind if I share a few additional captures I was able to obtain. These were all taken from my viewing location in Sikeston, MO.

The main image shown here depicts the eclipsed sun at C2, mid-way during totality, and at C3. The C2 diamond ring image in the upper left is a single exposure of 1/250 s. I applied a non-linear stretch to the data, mild noise reduction, and color balance adjustment -- however otherwise this image is just as it came from the camera. The image at totality was created from a stack of 8 exposures (1/4000 s, 1/1000 s, 1/250 s, 1/60 s, 1/15 s, 1/4 s, 1 s, 4 s) that were averaged together. The final C3 image showing the Bailey's Beads (lower right) is a single exposure (1/4000 s). All images were acquired with an ISO 200.

The first revision image (B) shows the evolution of the Bailey's Beads as the sun was emerging from behind the moon. Each was acquired with a shutter speed of 1/4000 s. The three images shown were taken 1 s apart. A beautiful solar flare is visible -- this could be seen with the naked eye during totality. In performing a comparison afterward, I noticed Eclipse Orchestrator did a remarkably good job at predicting the shape of the Bailye's Beads features.

The second revision (C) shows the eclipse from start to finish (including partial phases). (Yes, I stayed even after totality was finished in order to capture the entire eclipse end-to-end! There was no way that I wanted to sit in all the traffice heading back to St. Louis.) Each capture of the partially eclipsed sun was taken through a Baader solar filter with an exposure time of 1/4000 s. The yellow color of the partial phases was added artificially.

Finally, I have included an image of the portable setup I brought with me to image the eclipse (in case you ever have to do something similar) in rev D. It all fit reasonably well on the plane!

Hope you enjoy these photos - wishing you clear skies!
