Description

IC 417 / Spider Nebula

Taken during the recent full moon, ostensibly to test out my new dedicated Sii filter, which has been a noticeable improvement over the NB3 due to the much narrower bandpass. For this image I chose to just use the Red channel, but I'm going to investigate various PixelMath expressions that might allow me to recover some additional data from the G/B channels as on the 533MC they still have ~20-30% / ~5-10% sensitively at the Sii wavelength.

Unfortunately I've finally been bitten by the dreaded l-extreme halos and, whilst I was able to work around it for most of the stars, Phi Aurigae proved too much leaving me with a pretty nasty halos in both Ha and Oiii data even after star removal. I decided to cut this image a bit shorter than I was planning due to this and invest the clear nights into another project that I'll be processing next instead - originally I'd planned at least another full night of Sii data.
