M45 - Pleiades

Messier 45, the Pleiades, an open cluster in Taurus. It's been known since antiquity given its brightness as a result of the relative (<450 ly distant) proximity from Earth. Like my last image, this one is from an old set of data I've been remiss in processing. There were some issues with the background in the integrated image likely due to some flat-fielding issues and light pollution; some misalignments in framing also appeared to have created some unfortunate subtle but sharp gradients that were difficult to deal with in post-processing. While a heavy masking and denoising might have addressed it better, I ended up mitigating it by limiting how far I pushed the stretch and keeping the background darker than I usually do.

Integration was a total of 32.9 hours captured from an approximately Bortle 7 backyard.

Processed in PixInsight using standard preprocessing and calibration, DBE, PCC, annd MultiscaleLinearTransform. Stretching accomplished using 3 passes of Arcsinh Stretch. Version B (see mouseover) uses a synthetic luminance pulled from the linear RGB processed with Deconvolution, stretched with Masked Stretch, and combined back with the RGB using LRGB combination. Version B skipped this step. Next was Curves Transformation for contrast and saturation, followed by SCNR to remove green. Version B also concluded with a slight bit of unsharp mask to enhance small detail. Let me know which version you prefer - and thanks for looking!

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
