Description

An interesting celestial event is going on right now in the night sky as the planet Mars (God of War) is gliding by The Pleiades (The Seven Sisters). Trying to do justice to this interesting conjunction of a solar system object and a deep space object is challenging given their relative differences in brightness.

I think most people are aware that many of the brighter celestial objects share the name of a god or deity. In this photo, Mars is the God of War and the Pleiades are the seven sisters....both easily visible in the night sky right to the naked eye in close proximity to each other for a few more days. This conjunction of these two objects is the closest they have been in the night sky in 30 years and we will have to wait until 2038 to capture another photo like this with them. That being said, this does happen often enough that stories of Mars and the sisters have made their way into various mythologies. The god Ares (Greek version of Mars) was cunningly trapped by a fine net while having an affair with another goddess. You can see the fine netting of the Pleiades which likely contributed to this tale. In Indian astronomy and Hindu astrology, the Hindu God of War Kartikeya was raised from infancy by the Sisters (Krittikas, although there were only six!). Other tales of this planet and deep space object interacting together can be found in religions around the world.....which leads to an interesting theory and question asked by others, did these civilizations/religions name the planets and asterisms after their gods/goddesses or did they name their deities after these planets and asterisms....watching them each night and telling stories of their interactions! Food for thought!
