Description

Next up from Okie-Tex -- IC 5146, the Cocoon Nebula!
This is another one from the enormous Nikon 400mm f/2.8 I had the pleasure of borrowing, with the QHY533M I'm testing for QHY.

The Cocoon is mostly an emission nebula with some reflection nebula (that I wasn't able to pull out as much as I'd hoped) in the blue around the edge of the red. There's also a large dark nebula, Barnard 168, surrounding the Cocoon and extending like a massive finger downwards. It's located in the star-studded constellation Cygnus. Being an emission nebula, there's a ton of hydrogen gas that is the source of newborn stars in the nebula.
